So how do you explain the difference between Paul's message in Acts 13 and Paul's message in Acts 17 other than the audience. Granted, the response to each was comparable. Some believed, some didn't.

a quick reread of the article will show that not once did i say a preacher should not exegete his audience.

to the contrary, my article says the pastor should. however, the preacher will not accuately gauge the audience unless it is through a strong grid of Scripture.

i think we often espouse a "romantic" view of paul at athens. we think he is so cool for looking at the culture at mar's hill and adapting its icons for his message. actually, it's a great text to see exactly what i'm talking about.

paul does walk through the city and observe many things that break his heart (16). however, reading his sermon (or at least the portion we have) his starting points actually seem to be out of the Word and his true exegesis of the people is based out of what he knows about the character of God.

    check out my thoughts here.
